A remarkable example of early Victorian Gothic Revival ceramics, this rare Charles Meigh Apostle Jug is a highly decorative relief-moulded stoneware pitcher, designed in Hanley, Staffordshire, England, and associated with Charles Meigh’s celebrated Apostle design of 1842.

The design was published/registered by Charles Meigh on 17 March 1842 and is recognised by major museum collections as an important example of the Gothic Revival in nineteenth-century English pottery.

The jug features an elaborate architectural Gothic composition, with eight deeply relief-moulded standing figures arranged within pointed Gothic arches around the body. The figures are surrounded by intricate architectural details, scrolling foliage, ornamental panels and grotesque/gargoyle-like masks. Historical Note

Charles Meigh was an important nineteenth-century Staffordshire potter based at the Old Hall Works in Hanley. His firm was among the early English manufacturers to embrace the Gothic Revival style in ceramics. The Apostle Jug of 1842 became one of his best-known relief-moulded designs.

The relief-moulded technique allowed elaborate figures and architectural decoration to be incorporated directly into the vessel through moulding, producing the crisp, sculptural surface for which Meigh’s jugs are known.
